Photos, bags of water, tape. 2013. Strange Coupling Show at Blindfold Gallery, Seattle, WA
Kept is a collaboration with Artist Serrah Russel. The work explores concepts of containment and place. The photographic images of bag of water were collected from bodies of water Serrah visited in Hawaii. The actual bags of water were gathered by Alex from daily life rituals at home… such as taking a bath, washing greens, boiling tea, etc. Serrah and Alex were interested in this difference between foreign and domestic and unaltered material vs. material altered by use. The continuous horizon line, seen in Serrah's photo of river water pouring into the sea, severs to unify these two parts of the work. The line is echoed in Alex’s collection of bags and represents the continuation of daily life activities and rituals.
